McCain: Did He Or Didn't He?

This whole brouhaha about whether McCain voted for Bush in 2000 cannot be good for him. Some have called it a gift to McCain, allowing him to wink-wink at indie voters who hate Bush. But they forget that this only undermines McCain even more with his base -- Republicans. They don't trust McCain, they never trusted him, and his denials about this stuff just don't seem too genuine. I'd be a lot less likely to support Obama if I learned that he voted for Bob Dole in 1996, or Bush in 2000, I'll tell you that.

And what's worse - to counter these charges, McCain has to go on TV and talk about how he voted for Bush, campaigned for Bush, how much he loves Bush. It's a no-win situation for him.
